One year until T+1 and banks still aren’t ready

Sunday marked one year until the T+1 deadline. By 11th October 2027, banks must have compressed their settlement windows to carry out trades in one day. But our research shows readiness throughout the industry remains uneven, with nearly a quarter of banks having no plans in place at all.

The FCA has warned that its supervision will become “increasingly intrusive” as the deadline approaches, and firms will need to show clear evidence of their progress. With several key deadlines landing before the end of this year, the race to automate post-trade processes is well and truly underway.

Why banks are going to struggle

Legacy architecture is one of the biggest barriers standing between banks and T+1. Many still rely on batch-dependent systems, some of them decades old, that were never designed to talk to each other in real time. As trade data passes between them, every handoff adds delay, and every gap gets filled with manual checks and workarounds.

A two-day cycle gave banks time to absorb that friction. T+1 doesn’t. A single mismatched instruction or missed piece of data is now enough to cause a failed trade. Banks are staring straight at cash penalties, regulatory scrutiny and damaged client relationships.

The clock is already ticking

With key milestones landing well before go-live, banks have less time to prepare than they might think.

Upcoming deadlines include:

  • 7th December 2026: First EU regulatory deadline for allocations and confirmations, as set out by ESMA.
  • 31st December 2026: Allocations and confirmations should be completed by 23.59 UK time on trade date, and firms should have adopted FMSB standards for standing settlement instructions (SSIs).
  • February 2027: End-to-end industry testing windows open across the UK and EU.
  • 11th October 2027: T+1 goes live. Settlement instructions must reach the CSD no later than 05.59 UK time on T+1.

These dates make one thing clear. Banks can’t wait until 2027 to act. The work needs to start now. And for most, that means tackling the gaps between legacy systems that slow every step down.

Modernising without starting again

The good news is that T+1 doesn’t mean ripping out core systems. Instead, banks can add a messaging and orchestration layer that connects their existing systems. This moves trade data between them in real time and triggers the right workflows automatically. That cuts out manual handoffs and gives banks the speed and control T+1 demands.

This is where Aquila comes in. Aqua Global’s cloud-native messaging and orchestration hub sits across a bank’s existing systems, connecting them in real time so trades can move from execution to settlement without manual handoffs. Banks can automate step by step, keeping their core systems in place, through:

  • Automated Capture: Immediate booking and enrichment using granular SSIs.
  • UTI Lifecycle Tracking: Clean, transparent tracking to accelerate break resolution.
  • Real-time Matching: Identifying exceptions intraday, long before settlement risk materialises.
  • Continuous Reconciliation: Automated trade and position checks that run 24/7.

No more waiting

T+1 is no longer a distant deadline. It’s knocking on the door. Banks that haven’t started preparing face a scramble to automate allocations, confirmations and settlement instructions before testing begins. Some could miss this year’s deadlines altogether. Those that move early won’t just meet the regulatory deadline. They’ll build faster, more resilient post-trade operations and leave slower competitors playing catch-up.
